PICC -parish information & communications

The Parish Information & Communications Center
In developing a vision for the parish of today, we recognized the growing importance of reaching out for

We started by defining the vision for our parish and how PICC would play its proper role in bringing the hope to reality. Having done so, and that task is a continuing one, we ourselves have a better understanding of our goals, challenges, tasks and how to effectively address them.

The next important step was to assess the resources that would be required: the expertise, talent, time, equipment and technology. Substantial strides forward have been made to date, as we developed a team of people who are part of PICC. Each day our hope comes closer to reality as each of our new and old volunteers play an important role in the ultimate development and implementation of our communications plan.

An emphasis of our goal is to enlist in our overall parish mission every man, woman and child who would like to take an active part. Our invitation is extended through the sights, sounds and feelings we generate every day through our liturgy, the pastoral homilies, music, our welcoming hospitality, all the ways our ministries serve others and our communications.

making communications easy!

Saint Dominic Parish has an established area of communications for ministries and staff.

(PICC: Parish information and communications center)

This is where most of these activities are disseminated from.

Ministries/departments should assign one person for their marketing/communications and that person should call the rectory or email as outlined below.  Any communications needed beyond your ministry group fall under the PICC ministry.

All communications/website blurbs/notices/flyer/emails/invitations/brochures/etc., for the parish come out of PICC. This helps to ensure consistency, accuracy and privacy of all parish information while offering a variety of effective marketing formats for your activity/ministry.

Ministries have many marketing tools at their disposal simply by contacting the rectory first for permission to have the activity, then :

 1.   The bulletin (only effective if you change up the announcement every week or so to ensure that  it doesn’t get stale) – submit written announcements via email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by Monday 10:00am deadline for the upcoming bulletin - holidays require 12-14 days notice for our printing company. Holiday reminders are sent to those appointed as the ministry communications person.

 2.   Full page inserts for the bulletin- through PICC scheduling and submit two weeks ahead of time, 860.628.0349 or via email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . Discrecion should be used when considering a full page insert, especially if it will be color.  If the item most likely will not be saved or even taken from the church, please consider the costs to the parish before requesting a full page insert.  Many times with proper planning, a full page inside the bulletin can be given and this is at no printing cost to the parish.

 3.   The ability to use table space for marketing or selling tickets in the parish center – schedule with the rectory for table space This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

 4.   Submitting announcements for the website - Home page news on the website which features current information that will also feed out to facebook and twitter. - submit information via email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

 5.   Keeping their ministry website information fresh - submit information via email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

 6.   Brochures for events- If there is a program that requires a brochure, PICC can create it for you in a simple black and white for items that will most likely be discarded after the activity, or a full color brochure that may be kept as a keepsake or used over again.  Call the rectory and/or submit information to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

 7.   The website calendar - submit information via email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

 8.   Full page announcements for our bulletin board in the parish center - submit information via email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

 9.   For events reaching outside of our parish we have assistance to write up press releases as well. - submit information via email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

 10. E-Briefs - Saint Dominic Church does have a parishioner email list and an email list server for sending out bulk mailings while keeping these addresses confidential.  The PICC ministry has determined that the  bulk e-mailing tool is not effective when done randomly and it should not be used due to a lack of other marketing.

We are going to formulate a format that is either a  bi-monthly or monthly newsletter style email(the newsletter format will be ready to go in January).  It will list important and upcoming parish activities and you will need to submit for this marketing at least two weeks ahead of time.  And, again, as with all of the other marketing tools listed above, it should not be a simple repeat of the same bulletin blurb you submitted prior. Announcements should be unique, changed up in text and headlines, etc . Graphics can be submitted if appropriate, as well.  There are branding elements for various things that you want to repeat so people recognize your ministry or a repetitive event, but you have to gage your marketing effectiveness:  if you are selling tickets or taking signups to an event and not getting a good response to your current marketing, change it up.

PICC is and always has been a very effective ministry in our parish and the role is to support our ministries through marketing and communication.  Centralized communications also help to ensure that activities aren’t running into each other, and that information going out is accurate and in accordance to what is scheduled on our parish calendar of events.

PICC will proofread and make grammatical corrections as needed.  Some “branding” items will be taken into consideration when creating printed materials, such as the parish logos; typical fonts and printing styles used by the parish; adjusting proper names such as Geraghty Parish Center, Community Learning Center, etc., to avoid confusion.

PICC will also try to strike a balance with submissions:

  • If you have requested a full page insert, the item will not be repeated inside the bulletin as well, allowing space for other ministries as needed.
  • Cover requests are taken into consideration but will be weighed against the importance of other activities going on, such as an event taking place closer to the date of bulletin, archdiocesan or liturgical events, etc.
  • If there are too many requests for bulletin inserts on a given week, your submission may be moved to a more appropriate week and you will be notified.
  • If you request an insert and there is ample room for us to place it in the bulletin you may be asked to consider that option as good stewards of the parish.
  • Out of parish event bulletin requests are taken as space allows.  Our first priority is to the parish and the archdiocesan events. Other activities for non-profits and other churches are placed in as space permits.  We do not accept third party submissions for outside activities. The submission must come directly from the organization holding the activity.

If you have questions on any of the above, please don’t hesitate to contact the rectory.  860.628.0349

Thank you for all that you do to make our parish such a wonderful and vibrant community.
